Half a century of community-rooted legal guidance built on trust, accessibility, and personal service.

CBM Lawyers is officially entering its 50th year of service, a milestone that cements its position as the Fraser Valley’s trusted community law firm. Across five decades, CBM has proven that high-level legal expertise doesn’t have to be cold or complex - it should be practical and accessible. By combining “big city” experience with deep-seated local roots, CBM enters this 50th year celebrating a legacy of relationships that span generations.

A lot has changed since CBM first opened its doors in 1977. Back then, Langley was a quiet, largely rural community of roughly 35,000 residents, and legal research meant hours in a physical library with leather-bound books. Today, as the community’s population nears 160,000, the Fraser Valley has transformed into a bustling economic hub. Over the last five decades, CBM Lawyers has traded typewriters and carbon paper for secure digital filings and virtual consultations to meet the needs of the modern world. While the tools of the trade have changed, the firm's heartbeat remains the same. CBM enters its 50th year still committed to the idea that legal services should be human-centred, built around deep local roots and personal relationships that only half a century in the Fraser Valley community can provide.

“When we first opened our doors, Langley was a close-knit community where reputation was built one handshake at a time. While the Fraser Valley has grown and modernized in ways we never imagined 50 years ago, that same principle remains our bedrock. It has been a privilege to serve generations of families and businesses within our community, and I am incredibly proud of our leadership for carrying that same neighbourly, human-centred approach into the next 50 years.” - John Campbell, Founding Partner

Today, CBM Lawyers has expanded its footprint to three locations in Langley, Aldergrove, and Maple Ridge, supported by a dedicated team of 45 legal professionals. The firm’s long-standing reliability is reflected in its leadership. CBM remains anchored by the original values established by founding partners John Campbell and Rick McMullan. Having since passed the torch to the next generation of leadership, their foundational principles continue to guide the firm. This transition has been seamless, with partners Doug Simpson, Byron McCarthy, and Jon Goheen at the helm. Together, this leadership team ensures that CBM’s legacy of community-first legal service is carried forward for the next generation across the Fraser Valley.

“There is a unique responsibility that comes with upholding a leadership legacy that spans 50 years of history. We aren’t just practicing law; we are stewards of a reputation built through trust by the founding partners. Our goal for the future is to ensure that as the Fraser Valley continues to grow and change, CBM remains that reliable, grounded voice that treats clients as neighbours and not just a case number.” - Doug Simpson, Partner

As CBM looks toward the next 50 years, its core values remain the firm’s guiding principles. A cornerstone of this commitment is a long-standing culture of mentorship, where the experience of lawyers is shared with future generations of legal talent. Just as important is CBM’s ongoing commitment to the community it calls home. Through decades of local philanthropy and active volunteerism, the firm has demonstrated that its responsibility is as much about people as it is about the law. From supporting vital local infrastructure like the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Langley School Board, to involvement with organizations such as the Salvation Army, Heart and Stroke Foundation and many more, the team’s impact reaches far beyond the office. These pillars of professional guidance and community support have defined CBM’s first 50 years and will continue to be the foundation upon which the firm builds its future.
